Commander's Wife

On Friday the 13th Tim took charge of Charlie Company, where he previously served as a platoon leader at Fort Hood and in Afghanistan. The morning began with Dave and Joan helping me pick up the cake, sandwiches, fruit and veggies trays for the lunch we had to cater for 100 people. We arrived at Fort Bliss an hour before the ceremony and set up the room in which we would serve lunch. Thank goodness my in-laws were able to help me get everything ready! My pregnant self wasn't too much help as they schlepped all the food upstairs. Once that was finished we headed to the hanger in preparation for the change of command ceremony. It was nice to see all of Tim's friends and their wives there to witness this major event in his career. A gigantic American flag hung on the far wall of the hanger and two apaches flanked his future company and the audience. The ceremony was moving and powerful as the battalion commander, previous company commander, and Tim spoke about the responsibilities and privilege of leading these soldiers. The duties and flag were passed along to Tim and he happily accepted. After the ceremony we enjoyed lunch with his soldiers, their families, and our families. Then, Tim gave Travis a tour of the Apache and the two looked liked little kids having a ball. Tim returned to work for the rest of the afternoon and then we were off to a hail and farewell ceremony for the remainder of the evening.

I was extremely proud to see my hubby honored and encouraged by his co-workers and I know with full confidence he will be a top-notch commander. There are going to be some CRAZY work hours that ensue, but that's just what's necessary for him to take complete care of his soldiers and their families. I must trust in this plan God has for Tim and remember the good he is able to do for others in this new position. I will also be running the family readiness group for the company, once again, which encompasses disseminating information, planning socials, organizing fundraisers, and supporting the spouses during deployment. Hopefully I'll enjoy the life of a commander's wife.
