Reflux Follow-Up

This morning, Addie had her one week follow-up appointment to discuss her reflux. Unfortunately, the Zantac has made no difference in her vomiting and crying after she eats. She has gained 2 more ounces, putting her at 8 pounds. The fact that she is still gaining weight is an excellent sign that she's getting nutrition, even though she spits up so much. The doctor is switching her medicine from Zantac to Prevacid, which she has to take in the morning 30 minutes prior to eating. She reinforced the other things we need to be doing, like having her upright after feedings for 30 minutes, putting her on an incline to sleep, burping her, and feeding more often. She said the Prevacid can take a while to work so they'll review her progress at her two month check up. The doctor explained that reflux in babies generally subsides by seven months, with the maturity of the esophagus. Usually they aren't concerned if the babies are "happy spitters" but our little Adeline usually cries in pain after her feedings, which requires the medication. I look forward to starting the Prevacid tomorrow in hopes that she'll be much more comfortable!
